The trend of major airlines today is to focus on long-haul flights to earn and point to a new business model on short-haul to limit loses.
This model provides to move a war against the low-cost airlines (Ryanair and easyJet) adopting their strategies and their organization.
As we have seen, Air France has launched “Hop”, a low-cost airline that activities of all her regional subsidiaries but, as we learn in these days, the idea of management transalpine does not stop here .
On the website of the newpapers “Corriere della Sera” we can read that Air France and Alitalia are thinking to joining activities of Hop! and of Air One, the low-cost branch of Alitalia, to create a single company large enough to have the necessary critical mass to be a serious competitor in low-cost market.
But things are not so simple because it would be necessary to harmonize the contracts of the personnel of all companies that will merger in the new airline, and also because it would be necessary to harmonize also the fleet, which today counts (too many) different models (ATR , Embraer, Bombardier, Airbus).
The road is so long and uphill and only the coming months will determine whether the new company will be created. Months which Alitalia and Air France will use to mitigate losses, while Ryanair and easyJet will use to expand further their activities.
